FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The Texas Heritage Living History Day will be held on Friday, September 28,
2001, at Louise Hays Park in Kerrville from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00
p.m.
Billed as "Another Way of Learning: Using Stories and Songs as Another Way of Learning," this educational event uses stories, songs, and old-west demonstrations to teach
children and adults alike the varied cultures and rich heritage of Texas music and its role in Texas history.
Highlights of the event will include Old West and Native American demonstrators, Texas history re-enactment groups, chuck wagons and teepees, noted storytellers, nature conservancy demonstrators, educational exhibits, a staging area with musical performers, and central to the event, the stories of Jimmie Rodgers, as performed by local actor Tony Navarra. Rodgers, the "Father of Country Music," resided in Kerrville during the last years of his life.
Educational packets will be made available for attending teachers and their students, without charge. Schools needing assistance to attend may apply for a 'transportation grant' from the Texas Heritage Music Foundation, producer of the event. Dr. Kathleen Hudson, Executive Director of THMF, confirmed that "
.last year, youth agencies and rural schools took advantage of this grant program so that they could attend. We are hoping more will attend this year." The attendance for Living History Day 2000 was estimated to be 1200 attendees, noted Hudson, an English Professor at Schreiner University in Kerrville. "We want to offer other ways of learning, free to this community. I know that telling stories and singing songs make a difference in the world."
For this year's Living History Day, THMF anticipates having as many performers/exhibitors as last year and, pending additional funding through business sponsorships, plans to expand the event's line-up, as well as, bring performers into local grade school classrooms during the week prior to the event. And thanks to generous underwriting from local foundations and business sponsorships, the event is free admission.
