March 2001
FROM THE DIRECTOR:
I'm having a great time celebrating and signing. My book, Telling Stories, Writing Songs: An Album of Texas Songwriters, has taken off. And I'm having fun on the ride! UT Press purchased a booth at SxSW in Austin, and I look forward to seeing lots of old friends in the music business. Gives me a chance to promote the THMF and our many projects.
We've had a full year, as usual. The coffeehouse series showcased Johnny Nicholas, Carolyn Hester, and Richard Dobson in the fall. This spring we showcased Lady Jane Gray, Mike Blakely y los Yahoos (Donnie Price and Larry Nye), Debbie Walton Trio on March 21, and Oliver Rajamani and friends on April 11. Quite an eclectic group, I'd say.
We are currently working on funding for the September 28 Living History Day in Louise Hays Park. Tim Wilton has provided a lot of help in the grant writing department. Tim Crenwelge gave us forms for a Texas Parks and Wildlife Grant. We met the deadline.
We support KRVL's participation in the Easter showcase of music. The THMF is not sponsoring a jazz concert in June. We've decided to focus our energies on the LHD in September when over 40 performers provide educational (and entertaining) programs for our community--FREE.
We could not be in operation without the support of 5K Laser (office space) and AC Printing (publication guidance). We have several permanent sponsors who have donated and participated for over five years: Family Sports Center, Kerrville Convention and Visitors Bureau, H-E-B, Wells Fargo, Wolfmueller's Books and Records, Crenwelge Motors, Kerr Business Services, Lions Clubs of Kerrville, Dr. Pepper, Culligan Water, YO Ranch, Inn of the Hills, Hillcrest Motor Inn, Kerrville Daily Times, Back 40 and a group of individuals. We always need sponsors for this event. It costs money to provide a free educational program. We already have a small group of businesses that responded to our first fund-raising letter. A big THANK YOU!
And a big THANK YOU to Glaze Designs for getting on board and making
this website shine!
And now for some of my discoveries: The Drew Ryan and Out on Bail Band plays wonderful country/Texas music with an edge, dueling guitars of Paul and Rob Grody! Great stuff.
Solid Gold Club at the Econo Lodge, now run by Big Earl himself. Tejano music on Sunday nights at 9:00. Lots of Schreiner students there on Thursday to hear Chad and Ryan play an acoustic set.
Music at Buzzie's on Thursday is still hot jazz and country. Ask E.C. Willman about that. Jams at Lone Oak still fill a Sunday afternoon (479 and I-10).
A memorable moment for me was my own booksigning on Feb. 21. at the coffeehouse. Memorable because Mike Blakely was the featured performer at the coffeehouse, and his writing ability is strong! I love his novel, Commanche Dawn, and his music is just as strong. "Ride the River" is one favorite. I have many! What a wonderful evening for me--my first acknowledgment as a writer by my community. Thanks to all who came out.
Another moment: March 7 was the birthday of Townes Van Zandt and Roxy Gordon. I went to Austin and heard J.T., Townes' son, sing and play like Townes. A moment of "solitude and silence." Saw George Dolis and Harold Eggars there--we were often together with Townes. Others on the bill included Eric Taylor, Pat Macdonald, Butch Hancock (host), Joe Ely, Beaver Nelson, Michael Fricasso, Pat Mears, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Jimmy LaFave and more and more. What an evening at the Cactus Café. It's an annual affair--put it on your calendar.
So much going on in Texas music. So many website to keep up with. Just want to point to the new Institute of the History of Texas Music. I've donated my tape archives to their library, and I'll be signing books there March 20 at the two-hour free Texas music concert on campus at SWT from 2-4 p.m. Thank Gary Hartman for that! He's a great director of a new and growing organization. I see a way for the THMF to become an arm, "in the field," to help do the work of the Institute!
Best resource: The Texas Music Industry Guide, compiled by the Texas Music Office and Casey Monahan. Contact them for a copy ($20) at music@governor.state.tx.us or call 512-463-6666. Tell 'em we sent ya!
House concerts abound: Jack Fields in Kerrville/ Call 367-5709. Randy Thompson at Hill Country Music in Fredericksburg, March 18, 7:30p.m., $8, featuring John Smith.
Send us your schedules and we'll post them! Randy is the newest member of THMF. Thanks for the support!.
Volunteers: Yep, we need you. John Krause has been managing an e-mail list to help keep in touch with people. If you'd like to join that list, contact him at jkrause@ctesc.net
Members: since we have no secretary, we don't always communicate like we should. We appreciate you! Keep in touch through the website. Let us hear from you.
