January 18, 2001 marked the 11th anniversary of Hopefest and the second year of a dynamic partnership between the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless and Willie Dixon's Blues Heaven Foundation.  The event was held at Chicago's Riviera Theater in the Uptown neighborhood.  Featured artists included Bo Diddley who has generously performed at each one of the previous Hopefest concerts.

Bo, once again, played his unique style of guitar well into the next morning.  Billy Branch opened Bo's set and accompanied him on harmonica.  Chuck Berry played and sounded like he did nearly fifty years ago and performed a farewell song with the audience begging him to stay on. Shemekia Copeland, daughter of the late Johnny Copeland and an up and coming blues queen in her own right, opened the show.  Otis Clay performed a tribute to "Pops" Staples. And how could Cash McCall not sound great on electric guitar with accompanists Dr. John on piano and Charlie Musselwhite on harp?

Interspersed among musical acts was a live auction with items such as guitars autographed by Eric Clapton, Bo Diddley, and all of the Hopefest 2001 performers.  Also auctioned off were a set of basketball jerseys autographed by Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, and Magic Johnson and a Muhammed Ali custom autographed robe and photo.  A silent auction ran throughout the evening and included nearly one hundred items.  Total proceeds for the evening exceeded $225,000 to benefit Chicago's 80,000 homeless.  A successful, vital evening!
